MARIA VILLAR

DIRECTOR OF CHARITY | DIRECTORA DE LA CARIDAD

St. Mary’s is pleased to announce the hiring of long time parishioner and new Director of Charity, Maria Villar, who started her position in early January. With a long history of experience in everything from charitable outreach to ministry to those in need, Maria is excited to serve her home parish. To connect with Maria, please contact her at mvillar@stmarysparkcity.com or (435) 940-5452 *or submit the Charitable Assistance Request Form to receive help.

A SANCTUARY FOR CHARITY

Since its beginning in 1881, St. Mary’s has always played an important role in providing for the charitable needs of the greater community. And during the lockdown and pandemic we, again, stepped into immediate action, providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in housing and financial assistance, food, clothes, diapers, toys, car seats, cribs, and tutoring. Building on that tradition and recent pandemic experiences, today, we seek to be the sanctuary of charity in the Wasatch Back to holistically and collaboratively address and answer the challenges faced by the most vulnerable in our high cost-of-living community. And that holistic and collaborative approach begins with the principle of “housing-first.”

Our firm conviction, based on our experience serving thousands of families, is that the flourishing of those we serve begins by helping them secure a safe, stable, loving home. In this high cost-of-living community there is a huge unfulfilled need for housing assistance. And St. Mary’s uniquely fulfills that need. St. Mary's community partners look to us for help with providing housing to those in need. Our community partners come to us because they know we get the job done. They know St. Mary's charitably, compassionately, and effectively help those in need secure a home.

WHAT OUR PARTNERS SAY

SUMMIT COUNTY CLUBHOUSE

“With the cost of living in this community, regular community members can so quickly be thrown into homelessness. . . The people that you’ve helped us serve this year are your pharmacy technicians in town. They’re healthcare workers. They’re resort workers. These are just community members. The people you see around you in the grocery store.

When someone comes to the clubhouse, they often arrive in a place of intense instability. What do I do? . . . When push comes to shove and we’ve got a crisis. . . there’s no else from any nonprofit in this community that’s on my speed dial in my ‘favorites’ section of my phone except for (St. Mary’s Director of Charity) Maria. There’s no one else who I would call at a time, any day and expect an answer. Housing is a priority for us, but it is extremely expensive. We could not address these issues without the support and partnership of Maria and you all (at St. Mary’s). Thank you for all you are doing.”

- Jen O’Brien, Executive Director of the Summit County Clubhouse

PEACE HOUSE

"Many funding sources come with strict limitations, especially when it comes to essentials like down payments, that can be especially challenging in a housing market where finding suitable options is increasingly difficult.

In this context our partnership with St Mary's is truly life-changing and sometimes life-saving. Together, with [St. Mary's Director of Charity Maria Villar], we're able to be creative.

We're able to explore housing rentals and accommodations and unique needs that survivors have. . ."

- Katherine Aguilera, Associate Director at Peace House

HOLY CROSS MINISTRIES

"We, at Holy Cross, have a program called ‘Parents as teachers.’ In it, we deal with a lot of situations . . . With single mothers losing their homes, struggling to pay for diapers, with people really struggling to make it on a daily basis just provide basic needs for their family that we take for granted.

St. Mary’s Director of Charity Maria is who I refer these families to. Maria’s on my speed dial. I know she’s going to solve this problem. I just have to call her and ask ‘Maria, can you please help me with this family.' I’m so grateful for everything St. Mary does for Holy Cross Ministries. This is my family.

- Miriam Garcia, Director of Education at Holy Cross Ministries
